Founded in 1797, Middletown is located about 13 miles from downtown Louisville and is one of Kentucky’s most historic towns. According to one tradition, it takes its name from its early role as a half-way point for travelers making the trek from Louisville to Shelbyville. Bounded on the south and east by Interstate 64 and the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265), Middletown is bounded on the north and east by the communities of Douglas Hills and Anchorage.

While the second and fifth largest shopping malls in the state – St. Matthew’s and Oxmoor Malls – are located on Shelbyville Road just a few miles outside Middletown, one need not leave this suburban community to seek shopping options there. The section of Shelbyville Road that runs through Middletown itself offers not only a myriad of shops but also a panoply of restaurants. Hurstborne Parkway, which intersects this section of Shelbyville Road, adds even more shopping and dinning options.

This relatively modern and bustling section of Middletown is only one aspect of the community, however. A quaint downtown historic district centers on the original road to Shelbyville. Now called Old Main Street, this bucolic pathway reveals Middletown’s connection to a slower and quieter past. The beautifully maintained Weatherby House was built in 1796 and operated as Davis Tavern for a long period ending in the 1870s. Today it functions as Middletown’s City Hall.

Given its connection to the past and its vibrancy in the present, Middletown offers a wide array of home sizes and types.
