Highlands Homes for Sale
Originally developed just before the Civil War, the Highlands is one of Louisville’s most historic neighborhoods. Containing a bustling district of small businesses and locally owned coffee shops, restaurants, and bars, it is also one of the most vibrantly unique neighborhoods in the city, if not the country.
Situated immediately southeast of downtown, the Highlands straddle a little over three miles of Bardstown Road, beginning at Lexington Road and ending at the Watterson Expressway. A long stretch of this section, referred to as “Restaurant Row” by locals, is home to a number of diverse cafes, restaurants, and bars, no one like the other. Locally roasted coffee is offered at Heine Brothers Coffee, locally prepared world cuisine is dished up at Ramsi’s Cafe on the World, and an assortment of locally brewed beers are poured at Cumberland Brews. These and numerous other cherished establishments dwell in the hearts of locals young and old and give rise to their call to “keep Louisville weird.” Indeed, the Highlands is the heart of Louisville’s charming weirdness.
On either side of Bardstown Road are tree-lined streets with some of the most diversely designed homes in the city. While Craftsmen and Bungalows are common in all parts of the Highlands, so too are cottages and detailed Victorians. Much like the eateries and watering holes in this eclectic area, it seems as if no two homes are alike. The same often goes for the lots on which these homes are situated. While some are located nearer to the bustle of Bardstown Road and are smaller and more densely situated, others are located on quiet streets that offer the solitude of much more sparsely populated neighborhoods.
The Highlands also boasts some of the most beautiful parks in the city. Cherokee Park, the largest of the at least five in the neighborhood, was designed by the world-renown landscapist Frederick Law Olmsted. (In addition to Cherokee and New York City’s Central Park, Olmsted designed a number of other parks in Louisville). Between its parks and its tree-lined streets, its unique shops and restaurants and its diverse architecture, the Highlands is an ideal urban neighborhood. It is no wonder, then, that it is also one of the most sought-after in Louisville.
